The diversity of birds in Peru accounts for 20% of bird species in the world, and over 62% of bird species in South America. Beginning in the early 1880s through the 1920s, more new species of birds were discovered in Peru than in any other country in the world.

Peru currently holds the world record for number of species of birds seen in one day without the aid of motorized vehicle (331 species at the Biological Station Cocha Cashu). This record was obtained in 1982 and is unsurpassed to date.
